VLAN Retention

The VLAN Retention feature ensures consistent ingress/TAP point identification even during VXLAN de-encapsulation. APB adds VLAN tags to identify the ingress/TAP point at the analyzer end, and for VXLAN-encapsulated traffic, this VLAN resides in the outer header. However, during VXLAN header stripping, the associated VLAN is unintentionally lost along with the outer header.

To address this, ASN introduces the VLAN Retention feature, which preserves VLAN information during de-encapsulation by storing the outer VLAN before stripping and seamlessly reapplying it to the inner packet header. This enables reliable TAP visibility while supporting VXLAN stripping across all VLAN packet types.

When this feature is enabled,

  • Outer header Vlan of incoming VxLAN packet is stored in ASN

  • VxLAN header is stripped

  • And then the stored Vlan is added in the Outer header of Inner/actual Packet

  • Then the Packet is Tx out of the ASN

  • This allows the Customer to achieve both VxLAN stripping and Identifying the TAP points via Vlan feature

  • This should work all types of Vlan packets in Inner/Outer Header
